I have a lot of thoughts about kate spade melamine plates. They are absolutely lovely, but they are also a little intimidating. The fact is that the majority of our thoughts and actions are on autopilot. It’s not necessarily a bad thing either. We are creatures of habit, so habits are usually what we have to deal with most of the time.
The problem is when we hit autopilot so hard that we forget we’re on autopilot. Because when we don’t even know what we were doing the day before, we don’t even know what day it is.
The problem is that there is a lot of autopilot in our lives, and we have no idea how to deal with it. When we are on autopilot, we don’t have the time, the ability, or even the inclination to do anything we want.
So what are we to do when we have autopilot? Well, we just run away. Well, unless, of course, we are trying to save the world (which is pretty unlikely since we can’t even remember what happened the day before, let alone plan a course-correct course correction). In that case, we have bigger stuff to do. We have to stop running, stop being lazy, and stop being so damn self-absorbed.
The thing about autopilot is that it is so often a false self-image that it can take you out of the moment. Instead of being able to make our own decisions, we are often just on autopilot and have no idea where we are or what to do next. But when we are on autopilot, we can’t control our thoughts, so we must act on autopilot.
We often think we are “autopilot” when we’re in fact just being on autopilot. When we’re so self-absorbed that we can’t even remember that we are in a car on autopilot, we are in fact running on autopilot. We can’t control our thoughts and, instead of using our skills to navigate our environment, we are on autopilot.
That’s what I feel like I am experiencing right now. As I type this I have a pen in my hand and I have just started to write the words “autopilot” and “automation” over and over again. I look around the room and see a bunch of things that I am aware of, but I have no idea what they are. I am self-aware, but I am not sure where I am.
Many of us have been feeling this way, or at least we think we have. For a while now, I have been going through a period of feeling like my thoughts are all happening on autopilot. Sometimes I feel like I am moving through things with no purpose. Sometimes I feel like I am just a series of events. I have no idea of what is going on around me, I have no idea where I am.
These feelings are extremely common among the human population. The idea that our mind is just a series of events is called the “autopilot hypothesis,” and it’s been debunked as many other theories have. But the idea that we may be living in a state where our very thoughts are happening on autopilot is still very real.
The autopilot hypothesis suggests that our thoughts and actions are being controlled by the brain and not by our minds. However, most of us are not living in a simulation. Most of us are actually doing the things we do because we know they are right. The problem comes when that’s the only thing we know for sure and we decide to do them. This idea that our actions are not controlled by our minds is called the ego-dependence hypothesis.
